What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational Therapy (OT) is the assessment and treatment of people with physical, mental health and learning disabilities through specifically selected and graded activities, in order for a person to reach their maximum level of functioning and independence in all aspects of their daily life (i.e. personal care, domestic skills, employment, education, leisure pursuits, interpersonal relationships).

The particular contribution and skill of the OT is the application of activity, both as an assessment and treatment medium; with the activity in treatment being used as the therapeutic medium or as the ultimate aim. The OT addresses physical, psychological, cognitive and social functions of occupations.

What is the Focus for Occupational Therapy
within Glen Care?

Occupational Therapy within Glen Care works towards people achieving a balance of activities within three key areas:

  • Self-care
  • Productivity (work/education)
  • Leisure

In order to work in a client-centred way, OT's need an understanding of a patient's volition, habituation, performance and environment, which all interact to shape a person's occupational behaviour and performance. This understanding is achieved through specialist OT assessments using the Model of Human Occupation (MOHO), which include:

  • Occupational Circumstances Assessment Interview Rating Scale (OCAIRS)
  • Model of Human Occupation Screening Tool (MOHOST)
  • Assessment of Motor and Process Skills (AMPS)
  • Assessment of Communication and Interaction Skills (ACIS)
  • Volitional Questionnaire (VQ)
  • Occupational Self Assessment (OSA)
  • Interest Checklists
  • Role Checklist

Ward-Led Activity Programme Integral
to Occupational Therapy

A ward-led activity and group programme is an integral aspect of the overall Occupational Therapy service within Glen Care's low secure hospitals and locked intensive rehabilitation units. By offering a multi-layered approach to activities and occupations, the quality of Occupational Therapy is greatly enhanced, resulting in patients' occupational behaviour and performance being optimized to the maximum.
