Horticulture as part of mental health well-being programme

The OT teams at Langford, Ashwood and Glenhurst have launched their horticulture projects. In addition to patients growing fruit and vegetables for cooking sessions, patients are also encouraged to grow summer plants from seeds to plant up around the hospital to make the hospitals a nicer environment. The Occupational Therapists are facilitating specific gardening groups and activities in the evenings and weekends, as part of patient's therapy day.

"Hospital in Bloom" and  "Sunflower Growing" competition have been launched for patients to enter. The aim is to create an active environment that patients can enjoy and also take responsibility for making their ward gardens nicer.

Horticulture has been shown to have a positive effect on people with mental health problems or depression. It gets patients outside, get moving and creates a sense of a positive future. Patients take pride and personal responsibility for making plants grow and everyone gets excited when flowers bloom.

The competition will be judged by Glen Care's Chairman - Gordon Phillips.

Let the sun shine and flowers bloom!
