Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) Group was launched for patients in secure hospitals of the Glen Care Group.
What is WRAP?
The Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) was created in America by Mary Copeland, who experienced mental health problems herself. She worked with others to develop a self-directed, proactive approach to wellness, and describes WRAP as: "A tool that can aid an individual's recovery and its underpinning principles support the recovery approach. WRAP is a systematic way of monitoring wellness, times of being less well and times when experiences are uncomfortable or distressing. It also includes details of how an individual would like others to support them at these different times". www.mentalhealthrecovery.com.
WRAP is an individual plan that you can choose to develop over time; it looks at the whole of your life from wellness through to times of being less well, including uncomfortable, distressing experiences. WRAP is about you understanding the meaning of these different times and action planning what you and others can do with the aim of preventing things from worsening and optimising times of wellness.
WRAP is underpinned by 5 key concepts:
1. Hope - You may experience mental health difficulties, but you can get well, stay well, and go on to meet your life dreams and goals.
2. Personal Responsibility - It's up to you, with the assistance of others, to take action and do what needs to be done to keep yourself well.
3. Education - Learning all you can about what you are experiencing so you can make good decisions about all aspects of your life.
4. Self Advocacy - Effectively reaching out to others so that you can get what is it that you need, want and deserve to support your wellness and recovery.
5. Support - While working towards wellness is up to you, receiving support from others, and giving support to others, will help you feel better and enhance the quality of your life.
WRAP is designed to put control in patient's hands, empowering them to identify what is important to their well-being.
How will the Group Work?
The 8 weeks closed group consists of group and individual exercises to help patients begin to think about what has happened to them and what helps thems. Group are then followed up by named nurse within one to one sessions to consolidate what was discussed and formulate that part of the WRAP.
Lee Houghton, Glen Care's Head of Occupational Therapy says: 'WRAP will help patients take control of their recovery and manage any crisis in the least restrictive way.'
