Meet the OT team

Glen Care is delighted to introduce the team who provide Occupational Therapy services within our mental health and learning disability services. In addition to the permanent staff, Glen Care also draw upon the skills of tutors and sessional workers to provide specialized interventions including education, arts, sports and music activities.

Lee Houghton

Lee Houghton joined Glen Care in November 2009 and is the Director of Occupational Therapy for the company, having qualified as an OT in 1998. Her previous role was the Specialist Community Services Manager for adult mental health NHS and Social Services in NE Hampshire. Lee is trained in the standardised OT assessment AMPS (Assessment of Motor and Process Skills), and has previously worked within a variety of clinical settings as an OT, also having been a care coordinator and a CMHT Manager. She has a proven track record in the redesign of health services, winning an NHS trust award for leadership in 2008, and project managing the redesign of a day service which won the “South East Coast Best of Health” award for partnership working in 2009. Lee is currently studying part-time for an MSc in Health Care Management at the University of Surrey, and is an Advisor for the College of Occupational Therapists Consultancy Service.

Sarah Speers

Sarah Speers joined Glen Care in March 2010 and is the Senior Occupational Therapist at the Langford Centre, Bexhill. Prior to embarking on a career in OT, she graduated with a degree in textile design in which she specialized in fashion knit wear, from which she sold garments and samples of her final collection to Donna Karan. Sarah has spent time living and working in America, including two years volunteering as a mental health support worker in an assisted living facility for adults with mental illness. Prior to undertaking her OT training, Sarah also held support worker posts within a CMHT and a mental health rehabilitation service. Sarah qualified as an OT in 2007 with an MSc in Health Through Occupation, and post graduate experience includes intermediate care rehabilitation services, Social Services OT Service and Social Services Living at Home Service.

Cornelius Buis

Connie started working for Glen Care as a Therapeutic Care Worker in 2003, before taking up the role of OT assistant in 2009, having completed his NVQ3 in Health and Social Care. Connie was born in South Africa and is a keen sportsman. He studied financial management at the Cape Peninsula College , and in 1996 Connie joined the Department of Correctional Services where he worked as a prison officer for seven years. During this time he was the unit manager to 150 inmates in a medium secure prison and a member of the Recreational Team who arranged activities such as football and rugby for the inmates. Connie is passionate about the benefits of exercise for patients with mental health difficulties, and utilises sports and exercise in OT interventions wherever possible. He has started the Langford Football Team in collaboration with coaches from Brighton and Hove Albion FC.

Alfie Keefe

Alfie joined the Langford Centre in May 2009; initially working on the male low secure ward and the locked intensive rehabilitation unit as a Therapeutic Care Worker, before commencing the role of OT Assistant in May 2010. Alfie is qualified in painting and decorating, carpentry and bricklaying, and previously worked for a construction company doing general building works, before making a career change into the health care profession.  Alfie is keen on sports, and represented Sussex for two years playing football. He continues to play recreationally and as part of the Langford football team along side the patients who will be entering the 5 a side league in the new football season. Alfie also has six years boxing experience.

Mark Sayce profile image

Mark Sayce

Mark started with Glen Care in April 2011 and holds the role of Driver which supports the OT team and the ward staff in delivering activities in the community, which he co-facilitates with the staff. Mark has a background in working with offenders, ex-offenders and people with substance misuse problems. He's worked in the probation service, facilitating group work such as anger management, social responsibility and alternatives to offending. He's a trained counsellor who has managed young persons' drug agencies in South East London. Marc enjoys football rugby and motorcycling.
